Beth Sattes

As a former classroom teacher, Beth Sattes understands the important role questions play in student learning.  Says Ms. Sattes, “Questions are important tools for both teachers and students in learning and knowing.  Productive questioning strategies can help build classroom learning communities where students engage in reflection, inquiry, and dialogue with their peers and their teacher.”

For many years, Ms. Sattes has been developing and delivering professional development to educators nationwide.  She is the co-developer of Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and Thinking (QUILT), a program to help teachers learn effective questioning skills.  She has written several books and articles on questioning and has served as faculty for the National Staff Development Council.  In addition, she is a senior research and development specialist at Appalachian Regional Education Laboratory (AEL).

Ms. Sattes earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Vanderbilt University and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from Peabody College.
